Part 3- Pop Up Concert at TIFF 2016

The following was a Pop Up concert that I was assigned to during the festival at The Garrison. http://www.garrisontoronto.com/ I was not sure what to expect, other than knowing I was the only photographer sent….so I figured there wouldn’t be any ‘star power’.  The Garrison is a more intimate venue.  Performing there was Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann). His music is truly original, as he combines percussive concert piano soundscapes.  There is an electronic, dark and deep sound to his music. He combines hubcaps, toy tambourines, sticks, tape, screws and steel balls in glass bowls…along with his piano on stage. I encourage you to check out his sound on youtube.

Hauschka is a composer and film score producer for the upcoming feature ‘Lion’, staring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara.  The film is directed by Australian’s Garth Davis. The film is getting amazing reviews, and I am excited to see it next month.

The stage was really, really dark for photography…one red light. ….a photographer’s nightmare! No flash was allowed during the performance, so I pumped up my ISO and took some shots. Hauschka was also nice enough to pose for me after his performance….which was an unexpected highlight for me.  Being able to take some unexpected posed, editorial photos of this musician was great! Having only a speedlight flash with me, I held it up and bounced the light off the side wall in the back room. This helped to create a  more artistic feel, as opposed to a dull flash photography look.  I wanted to create a more dramatic, mysterious portrait, that would reflect his music.   It was an added bonus that there was an old piano against the wall where I had him sit. YES!

After I spent the 5 minutes taking some portraits of him, we all went back into the main room for drinks and socializing. I continued to take shots of the guests, and that’s when a publicist mentioned that two movie actors came to support Hauschka. This included “potential Oscar nominee” Priyanka Bose, as her publicist described.  As well, there were the directors’ family members who all came from Australia to support the director’s film. Very cool.  I did spend a bit of time chatting with the Director’s mom…really nice lady and clearly proud of her son. She was enjoying her drinks and very chatty with me.

It was very cool that a Pop- Up concert which I expected to perhaps be uneventful, ended up being one of the highlights of shooting at TIFF2016.
