“Do you want to use a makeup/hair artist?”
This is one of the first questions I ask potential clients when they call me for a quote. Some people have never thought about it, others already have a firm ‘yes’ or ‘no’ response.
As a professional photographer, I try to find out more details about each individual and their business, in order to help them decide if they should consider using a makeup/hair artist. I do not make a profit when hiring one of these talents on behalf of my clients, and my interest is only to provide the best possible outcome for their shoot.
If the photo session is for an advertising client, yes, I always suggest using a makeup artist/hair, if their budget permits. Most medium to large advertising campaigns will fully intend to hire a makeup/hair artist.
When clients call me for business or music promotion photos, the decision is sometimes made by what fits into their budget. If a male wants business headshots, they typically feel they do not need a hair/makeup artist. This may be the case depending on their skin and hair type, but many individuals (especially for a music campaign) want to ensure that every aspect of the shoot is done professionally. I highly recommend it for music promotion or CD photos. It is an investment in the growth of your brand and music that will make a positive impression.
As a long time professional hair/makeup artist, and author, Natalia Zurawska states; “If you are a male with perfect skin and hair, a professional makeup artist is not necessary. If, however, you are looking for different looks which include a bronzed look, fun casual look, a sporty look – a professional makeup/hair artist will make you feel at ease. They will change up your hairstyles, provide a shave and manicure to make you feel pampered. You want to look and feel your best for the photo shoot.”
Here are a few photo samples from a shoot that Natalia and I worked on together for acting headshots of Manilyn. You can see the difference in the looks that we provided (coordinating clothing changes with each ‘look’ is also imperative). Whether the shoot is for acting or business portraits, it is a collaborative and fun effort.
“The results will be very professional. As an artist, we are experts at providing the looks you desire as well as making you feel at ease. Everyone enjoys a little pampering,” claims Natalia.
Some female clients are quite comfortable with their ability to do their own hair and makeup. I often will ask to see a previous headshot before our session. I will never force one to hire a hair/makeup artist, but I can advise them of the advantages and prices, and recommend who is available.
“I believe the biggest misconception is that the makeup will be heavy or too much. This is not the case at all”, Natalia states.
If a client is certain they can confidently do their own makeup, I always suggest bringing their own makeup to the shoot for me to review. They should have their hair and makeup completed when they arrive, and I tell them to bring their own hair brush, hair piece for an up-do (if possible), powder for their face if shine persists, lipstick for reapplication (with a couple of colors). Although I am not trained in this area, I can still confidently make recommendations and alterations.
What personally always impresses me is how people like Natalia truly enhance an individual’s best features. The client often never knew they could look that great, yet still looking like themselves.
Natalia insists that mascara and lipgloss/stick are mandatory if a professional makeup artist is not being used for a shoot (for females).
I personally have never photographed an individual who regretted using a makeup/hair artist for their session. Do I recommend it? Sure. But I respect that everyone’s budget and desire will differ, and great photographs can still be provided in the end. As long as it is known that great photography can not replace the additional benefit of using these talents.
In the end, it is up to the individual if this additional expertise is worth it for your next photo session.
