Rocking in the New Year with The Sam Roberts Band
My husband and I brought in the New Year’s with thousands of others in Garden Square. This is right outside of the Rose Theatre in Brampton, for a free show of three talented Artists; The Sam Roberts Band, Coleman Hell and StereoKid.
I was particularly excited to shoot this event, because the last time I photographed Sam Roberts was 13 years ago for a magazine story.
The guys did a fantastic job on New Year’s to entertain thousands of people attending. Fellow Canadians should be proud.
Yes, it was cold after three hours, but thankfully my husband and I could warm up backstage in the Rose Theatre. Those silver blocks at the front of the above photo are heat warmers for the players.
This below photo may be my favorite, since the lighting brings a captivating feeling without even having to show the singer’s face. There is sort of a moving spirit to the shot.
I had not photographed a concert in a long time, so this was a great way to spend the night for a change.
I had to include two shots of Sam and me chatting after the show, which my husband annoyingly failed to use the flash for (I’m not bitter at all about it).
Although I don’t specialize in concert photography, it was great to hear the band live, get some cool shots, and also to talk to Sam Roberts after the show. He remembered our shoot after all these years, since “it was my first photo shoot, and I was wondering why anyone would want to take a photo of me”. Now he is married with three kids, and still as nice as 13 years ago. I hope to work with him in 2016 and he mentioned the same back (hint hint to his label).
I would like to thank the band’s Manager, Dave Spencer of Eggplant Entertainment, for allowing me to be part of this event (and for their last two CD’s he mailed me, which my husband and I very much enjoy).
And thank you to my brother and sister-in-law for babysitting our two boys so we could go out for New Year’s….we owe them one!
So if you have no plans to open up 2017 next year, come by the Rose Theatre in Brampton to listen to some real talent and a great crowd. And it’s a free concert!
Stay tuned for another post later in the week of images of the talented Coleman Hell, who opened up for Sam Roberts at the event. Who is Coleman Hall…. you’ve likely heard his song by now! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAeWAwdZf9I
Here is a shot of Coleman Hell and me after his performance, on my Instagram.
Happy New Year Everyone!
