Capturing a Feeling, not a Photo
True musical talent is able to capture an indescribable feeling in the room and hold the attention of everyone listening. When I photograph a musician, I strive to capture even a small aspect of this feeling & talent. Do I need to feel moved too as the photographer….. often, yes. If I feel it, then I can likely grab this through my lens.
This young woman and student was amazing performing at a gala at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. I would have loved to have shot so many more images of her performing, but I also did not want to distract from what guests were experiencing, and therefore keep my shooting to a minimal (typically grabbing some shots at the very beginning of the performance). I have to always be conscious to respect both the artist and the guests when shooting at a concert…especially at more intimate venues and events.
